Writing Assessment · Years 3–12

Mark once. Teach on Monday.

One marking event produces student feedback, a GRR lesson plan, and whole-school literacy data. Here's how.

How Writeiq works

One marking event. Everything follows.

A teacher marks a piece of writing. Writeiq does the rest.

01
Mark the writing
Assess each criterion using the rubric. Scan handwritten work with Writeiq Vision, or students type directly. Around 2 minutes per student. Six writing modes: narrative, persuasive, and analytical (secondary) plus primary narrative, primary persuasive, and recount.

02
Student gets feedback
Every student receives detailed, criterion-level feedback immediately. A Developing student and an Extending student get completely different feedback on the same criterion. Language a 14-year-old will actually read and do something with. One clear next step. Consistent across every teacher in the school.

Characterisation and Setting
Your character has a physical presence in the scene. To push further, let your setting do character work: pick one detail in the room that reflects how Daniel is feeling, without naming the emotion directly.
Your next step: Rewrite your second paragraph so that one setting detail connects directly to Daniel's inner state.
Sentence Craft
You are writing clear, simple sentences. To move into Consolidating, vary your sentence openings and try embedding a subordinate clause before the main clause.
03
Teacher gets a GRR lesson plan
Teach Next identifies the highest-impact criterion for each band group and generates a complete GRR lesson plan - I Do, We Do, You Do - built from your class's actual results. Open it Monday morning. Teach it first period. No templates. No preparation.
Rosenshine-grounded explicit instruction
Developing band - 8 students - Sentence structure60 min
I Do - 15 min
Model two versions of the same moment: one with simple sentences, one with a subordinate clause opening. Class identifies which creates more tension and why.
We Do - 20 min
Pairs rewrite three simple sentences from their own drafts, embedding a subordinate clause. Share back. Class votes on which revision lands best.
You Do - 20 min
Students locate three simple sentences in their draft and revise independently. Swap with a partner to check the subordinate clause is in the right position.
Name students for peer modelling. Emerging band plan also generated.
04
Leadership gets seven views. Zero reports.
The leadership dashboard updates automatically from every assessment event. Seven tabs give principals and literacy leaders everything they need without requesting a single report from teachers.
Overview - band heatmap across every class and year level
Where the Gaps Are - criterion-level analysis showing which writing skills need school-wide attention
Action Plan - targeted professional learning priorities generated from real-time data. Not generic PD - specific teaching actions by year level
Teaching Cycles - before-and-after evidence. Log an intervention, run Writeiq again, see whether scores improved
Growth and Tracking - term-on-term, year-on-year. At-risk flags (Emerging on 2+ tasks). Boundary students within 8% of next band
Cross-class comparison - see which classes are strongest and where approaches are worth sharing
Action Plan from your school's data. Teaching Cycles that show whether it worked.

What a marking session looks like

From student writing to Monday's lesson plan.

Here's what actually happens when you use Writeiq. Start to finish, a class of 25 takes about 50 minutes to mark.

1
Students write
You set the task: genre, year level, prompt, time limit. Project the QR code. Students scan and start writing. No accounts, no passwords. Timer runs. Lockdown mode keeps them focused. You see submissions arrive in real time. They can request draft feedback before their final submission.
2
The engine marks for you
Open a submission and the IWAF v2.4 engine scores each criterion automatically. 26 logic gates validate the scoring in real time - if Spelling outpaces Sentence Structure by more than 20%, the engine flags it for review. If a student writes in the wrong genre, GATE-F catches it. Your job is to review and override with a reason where needed. Around 2 minutes per student.
3
Everything generates simultaneously
The moment you finish marking, three things happen at once. Each student gets personalised, band-differentiated feedback they can act on. Your dashboard shows the class grouped by band with the priority criterion identified. And a progressive L1-L5 lesson sequence generates. L1 is explicit modelling (I Do). L2 is guided practice (We Do). L3-L5 extend and deepen. Each lesson builds on the prior - paste the "Save for next lesson" note from the previous session and the next lesson picks up where you left off. Export each to PPTX. 197 teaching strategies embedded across every band and criterion.
4
Leadership sees it without asking
The leadership view updates automatically. Band heatmap across every class and year level. At-risk students flagged if Emerging on two or more tasks. Boundary students one mark from the next band. Teaching cycle tracking shows which priorities teachers have acted on. Cross-class comparison shows how each teacher's class sits against the cohort. Year-on-year growth when you archive and run again next year. Teachers do not compile a single report. The data is already there.
Writeiq Vision - handwritten and PDF

The last barrier to whole-class assessment.

Half your students write by hand. Vision removes that barrier. Photograph a handwritten page with your phone camera, or upload a PDF of scanned student work. The same IWAF v2.4 engine processes it, producing identical criterion feedback, lesson plans, and leadership data. Confidence scoring tells you when to check the transcription. Same engine. Same feedback. No typing required.

More than assessment

Entry diagnostic. Moderation. Portfolio.

Entry and diagnostic
Use Writeiq when students arrive at Year 7 to baseline their writing across every criterion. Know where incoming students are before they write their first piece for you. Identify students who need immediate support and those ready for extension.
Year-level moderation
Same rubric, same criteria, same 26 logic gates across every teacher. Use Writeiq results as the calibration tool when teachers moderate together. Cross-class comparison shows where marking is consistent and where it diverges.
Student portfolio
Consolidated multi-task family report showing every assessment, growth trajectory, consistent strengths, and areas to focus on. One page. Clear progress. Parents see the whole writing journey, not just one snapshot.
Curriculum alignment

Nine frameworks. One assessment.

Every criterion score maps to curriculum codes and achievement standard descriptors across all active frameworks simultaneously. No manual cross-referencing.
